I'm so bored I...

I have despised twitter ever since I first heard of it. It's useless. I don't know why anyone would want to share everything they do or why anyone would care to find out. I thought it was ridiculous. I still do.

I believe Facebook changed its look about half a year ago to the tabbed, live stream, what's on your mind format. I loved the tabs idea because it meant I didn't have to look at all those stupid flashy applications I saw on everyones pages. The live stream was cool too but at the time I didn't really care for the idea of a home page with info on everyone else. This was due mainly to the change in the way people could update their status. If I remember correctly, status updates were originally either on the side of the page under the profile picture or next to the name at the top of the profile page. Either way changing your status was awkward compared to the new changes. Now updating your status is as easy as posting on someone else's wall. Also posting has changed to sharing. Now since updating status has been made so easy its being done nonstop. I was so annoyed with all the updates on the home page that at one point I hid everyone so my home page would be nice and empty.

Eventually, a time came when I was bored and had nothing to do. My mind swayed to Facebook and I began unhiding people from my wall.... just to see what was going on. I started reading peoples posts, taking quizzes others had taken, playing games on Facebook, etc. and yada yada yada I started posting my own status updates regularly. Many said the new status update was just Facebook trying to get people to stop using twitter. When I found out what twitter was I had to agree. Its still pretty much useless. This summer I posted a lot of status updates and I kind of annoyed myself by posting so many. So I slowed down and tried not to go on Facebook so much.

I finished up my internship at Cisco last week. I had a great time. I learned a lot and kept busy. I've been home since Friday with nothing to do. Mostly everyone I know is either out of town or back at school already and I am bored again. So bored that I always find myself wanting to post a status update on Facebook. I know its not really a bad thing but I don't want to think that I'm annoying others with my meaningless status updates. The problem is I need something to do.

It's sad that the solution I have found to my boredom is something I hate with a passion. I got a twitter today. If you are really interested in following the dullness that is my life you can follow me at http://twitter.com/krisharmas. I still hate twitter. It's just helping me cope with the boredom before I head back to school. I'm going to post the status updates I would have posted on Facebook on twitter so as not to annoy others and myself whenever I log into Facebook.

I guess I'll start tweeting now. Good God what have I done?

Google Amazes Me

Google has done it again. Err... will do it again... Whatever it is.

Google has grown so much since it was just search engine. I'm still using almost all of the products and applications of theirs that I have tried over the years such as Gmail, Google Maps, etc., and more recently Google Chrome. Up next are two products I am really very excited for -- Google Voice and (especially) Google Wave.

Google Voice -- from my understanding, as they haven't given me an invite to use it yet -- gives you a phone number that is designated to a group of phones. When this number is called all the phones in that group will ring. The phones that ring can be set based on which contact group they are in or even depending on whether it is morning or night. I can't imagine when you would ever miss a phone call with this setup, but even so they have added voicemail in Google Voice. Whats really cool is the voicemail can be transcribed and read if you don't want to listen to it. I think free SMS and calls, the ability to record calls, conference calling, and more amazing features will draw tons of users.

Google Wave is the product I really want to use. I just found out about it today when I was doing research on a Microsoft product called SharePoint. I think its going to revolutionize social networking and could even have an impact on how business is run. Basically people can open up what they call a Wave which is like an environment where people can chat or collaborate on whatever they like. Everything is live. Everything is real time. It looks incredible. If you're chatting with your friend you can see what your friend is typing character by character. It allows you to start replying to their message if you know where they are heading. Instant messaging can become so much faster. It can be used like email too so if someone is not logged in at the time they can reply to your message later.  I think the feature that can be used in businesses is document editing. A document can be loaded into the Wave and any number of participants in the Wave can edit the document at the same time. You can see everyones updates in real time. If you want to see how the updates were made -- meaning when they were made and who made them -- Google has included a playback feature where you can go step by step and see how the changes happened. There are so many features I am leaving out because there are too many. Its awesome in general. If you have time watch this video. Its kind of long so if you want skim through it don't just watch a few seconds and skip forward. I put some suggestions for parts to watch at the bottom of this post if you dont want to watch the whole thing. But I recommend to watch the whole thing because Google Wave looks to be just mind blowing.

Key points in the video if you don't want to watch the whole thing:
Email/instant message - 7:40 - 11:00
Playback - 12:45 - 14:30
Collaberative editing - 35:30 - 37:45
Searching - 41:30 - 43:20
Spell checking - 44:00 - 45:40
Extensions/apis - the rest of the video
